  1. LOYOLA COLLEGE, CHENNAI

ABOUT COLLEGE

Loyola College was founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1925, with the primary objective of providing University Education in a Christian atmosphere for deserving Students, especially those belonging to the Catholic Community. Although this college is meant primarily for Catholics, it admits other students irrespective of caste and creed.

The College aims at training young men and women of quality to be leaders in all walks of life, whom we hope will play a vital role in bringing about the desired changes for the betterment of the people of our country, more particularly of the dalits and other poorer and marginalized sections of society.

The College trains young men and women to serve their fellowmen in justice, truth and love. It fosters an atmosphere of intellectual vigor and moral rectitude in which the youth of our country may find their fulfillment and achieve greatness as eminent men and women of service.

Loyola College became autonomous in July 1978. The College, however, continues to be affiliated to the University of Madras and is autonomous, in the sense that it is free to frame its own course of studies and adopt innovative methods of teaching and evaluation. The University degrees will be conferred on the students passing the examinations conducted by the college.

9 - MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, CHENNAI

Madras Christian College has entered into the 174th year of glorious service to the Nation. Founded as a School in 1837 in the black town of Madras, the Institution was built and its character shaped by a host of Scottish missionaries such as Anderson and Miller, Hogg and Boyd. Many dedicated Indian teachers as well as generations of brilliant students contribute to its success story. Leaving their legacy behind is a galaxy of illustrious alumni like President Radhakrishnan. Such was the stature of the Institution that Mahatma Gandhi agreed to chair a student session in its premises in George Town in 1916, while Billy Graham spoke in the famous Anderson Hall in Tambaram in 1956.

The College is known as much for its academic standing and leadership building as it is for social commitment. Besides, the unseen touch of the Almighty has always been felt and spoken of by generations of students and teachers.

Today the College has more than 5000 students (both ladies and gentlemen as they are traditionally called) and over 220 faculty members serving in 31 departments. It is a matter of pride that the institution is ranked among the Top Ten Liberal Arts and Science Colleges in India and also received the Rating of A+ (equivalent to 90-95%) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The 365 acre salubrious, idyllic campus with its rare, diverse flora and fauna is a great joy to live in.

10 – PRESIDENCY COLLEGE, CHENNAI

It had taken, decades for the College to take shape. At the behest of Sir Thomas Munro a Committee of public instruction was formed in 1826. In 1836 the duties of the Committee of public instruction was taken over by “The Committee of Native Education.” The plan drawn up by the Committee did not commend themselves to Lord Elphinstone who in turn proposed nineteen resolutions which were passed unanimously. The gist of the resolutions was as follows:

“That it is expedient that a Central Collegiate Institution or University should be established at Madras”.

“The Madras University to consist of two principal departments, a College for the Higher Branches of Literature, Philosophy and Science, and a High School for the Cultivation of English Literature and of the vernacular languages of India and the elementary departments of Philosophy and Science”.

14 – ST. XAVIER?S COLLEGE, AHMEDABAD

After the establishment and success of st xavier’s high school in ahmedabad, and of st xavier’s college in bombay , the gujarat jesuits wished to foray into university education. A chance encounter with an influential citizen of ahmedabad set the ball rolling in that direction. In mid-july 1954, while on a train to ahmedabad, fr charles gomes, s.j., principal of the ‘elite’ st xavier’s high school, mirzapur, met mr rasiklal khushaldas patell, (the double “l” affixed to his surname was as much atribute to his singularity as to his eminence.) Chairman of the indian cricket board, one of ahmedabad’s industrial tycoons, and member of the senate of the gujarat university . Mr patell persuaded fr gomes to start a college and promised to use his good offices to effect. Seizing the opportunity, fr gomes immediately contacted fr fernando arellano, the provincial superior. “and so,” says fr joseph braganza, one of the founding-fathers, “with a nod of the head and on the spur of the moment, st xavier’s college, ahmedabad, was launched, without a rupee in hand, nor a building on site – no trained jesuits, no experienced hands. It was an act of daredevilry, the merest folly, a gamble that could have failed. But the two men who took the decision, fr arellano and fr gomes, were men of destiny, positioned at the right time and place, men of vision and men of faith, men who thought big and suited their actions to their thoughts.” With the guidance and assistance of mr patell, fr gomes sprung into action. He filed an application for a new college, prepared the papers and produced the required documents to the university. Further, he started assembling jesuit personnel for the proposed college, raising funds, taking loans, looking for land, and so on.

It offers facilities like library, internet, laboratories, placements for all the candidates. The eligibilty for undergraduate courses is 10+2 pass and for post graduate courses the elibility is graduation. The admission to most of these courses is done through various entrance tests at different levels and for rest of the courses the admission is done directly.

15 – HINDU COLLEGE, DELHI

He Hindu College is recognized as one of the premier academic institutions in the country. It stands tall in public esteem and also in the memories of its alumni, many of whom are now prominent figures in government, business and industry, the media and education. Notwithstanding its name, students from all religions have grown up here and excelled in the chosen areas of their interests, be it academics, sports, or extra-curricular activities. However, the college was not built in a day

The Hindu College was founded more than a century ago in 1899, by Late Shri Krishan Dassji Gurwale. In the backdrop of the nationalist struggle against the British rule, some prominent citizens including Shri Gurwaleji of Delhi, decided to start a college that would, while being non-elitist and non-sectarian, provide nationalist education to the youth of Delhi.

Originally, the College was housed in a humble building in Kinari Bazar, Chandni Chowk, and it was affiliated to the Punjab University as there was no Delhi University at that time. As the college grew, it faced a major crisis in 1902 due to inadequate infrastructure. But fortunately at this point Rai Bahadur Sultan Singh generously donated a part of his historic property (which originally belonged to Col. Skinner) at Kashmere Gate, to the College thereby enabling it to function there till 1953 when it moved to its present location in the Delhi University.

Spread over 25 acres of land, the College premises are housed in one of the prime locations of the North Campus of the University of Delhi, and it is well connected by road and the Delhi Metro. The college campus is well known for its well-maintained gardens and lovely trees, a vast sports ground, and a men’s hostel which can accomodate nearly 200 students. It also has one of the finest auditoria in Delhi, a state-of-the-art seminar room, and last but not the least, its very own canteen where the eatables can get as sumptuous as the discussions.
