SCHOLARSHIP & LOANS
We frequently get letters from our readers to publish information about financial assistance for studies. In this issue, we fulfill a long-standing demand of readers and publish details of various scholarships and loans available for studies.
If your parents have not saved for your higher education, it is time to worry. Fees and other costs are going up every year, both in India and abroad. In India the situation is clouded by unreasonable demands of some institutes, which openly ask for donations and capitation fee, while abroad the cost is high anyway. Fortunately, there are some avenues of scholarships available. The only condition is that one must have a very good academic record and be able to compete with other candidates. If you are not meritorious, you should look out for loans which you can repay once you have finished your degree.
One of the first avenues that students must explore is the National Science Talent search which is available to students of class V to XII. If you have an interest in science and can make a good science project, apply to the NSTS. The last date for receipt of applications is December 31 every year. A written test is held in January every year. For prospectus and application write to: Project Director, Universal Trust, Universal Road, Trivandrum-1 (Kerala). You can also check out their website: http://www.universalonline.net.
After school, different fellowships are available for different levels of study. Some of these scholarships are available for research in a particular subject. There are more scholarships in sciences than arts, though quite a few are available in social sciences. There are also scholarships available for research abroad, the information of which is sent to colleges and university departments directly.
There are a number of exchange programmes of different countries with the government of India. These are advertised from time to time in newspapers and one must apply according to the conditions stipulated. The scholarships are given by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi.
For scholarships in the US, enquire at the office of the United States Educational Foundation in India (USEFI) which has offices in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta. The address of the USEFI office in New Delhi is: Fulbright House, 12, Hailey Road, New Delhi-110 001 (Tel: 3328944, fax: 3329718). For UK universities, contact the British Council at 17, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi 110 001 (Tel: 3711401, fax: 3710717).
Alternately, one can look for loans which can be repaid once you start earning. In India, such loans are available from banks and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), but both require some security. In the case of banks, some security in the form of immovable property or jewellery may have to be mortgaged, while in the case of LIC, you should have a life insurance policy with premium having been paid for a certain number of years. Many nationalised banks are not clear about the grant of educational loans, so one has to persevere in ones efforts. Usually, the interest rate is between 13-16 per cent. In some cases, repayment does not begin till after six months of completion of your course.
There are trusts too, which offer educational loans. These are: the JN Tata Endowment, the KC Mahindra Education Trust, the Mariawala Trust, and the RD Sethna Scholarship Fund. These are different conditions for different trusts, and the students must find out the one which is most suitable for individual needs.
